Thirteen videos. On this day of insane tragedy on the Virginia Tech campus, we are reminded again of growing youth violence. But what we are also seeing is how these violent acts are recorded for our prurient viewing pleasure.
Does video beget violence? Are youth compelled to mimic media violence - or do they simply perform violence for the camera? Bum fights... girl fights... bus fights... wilding... violence overwhelms our media. Is it becasue we love to watch? Is it for fame or notariety? Or is it because we constantly desire more extreme images to maintain our curiosity. Why do our children love violence? Do you hear them begging to see it? Or is it because we feed the addiction to perform it, and watch it?
Throughout this day, as CNN regularly updated the Virginia Tech body count. However, CNN also made sure to promote just how many new hits accumulated for their exclusive "citizen" video. What is to blame - Our media? This will not be the last violent youth incident in our mediated lifetime. The worst is still to come. We are growing the consequences of our media right now.
