Eleven videos that illustrate the increase of spiritual exploitation in media - particularly when news packages religion for vacuous consumption. Why is this? Because everything - even religion - is fair game in the big world of capitalism. ...and, don't forget the internet.
Jesus Christ action figures may only be an animated comedy skit, but Christian representation increasingly embodies Western corporate ethic. And, what happens when the message of god is simply mixed in with all other media messages? But nothing is sacred on TV; all religions are easy parody targets. Zen Buddhism, in particular, is an advertisement favorite. It is exotic enough to ridicule, mysterious enough to claim special powers, and foreign enough to contrast with Western cults of capitalism.
But why stop there? Why not exploit Amazon indigenous peoples to sell pharmaceuticals? Or even stereotypes of Arab “shazzam” incantations. Who cares. It all sells, right? But then, we haven't seen anything yet. Just wait until the 2008 election campaign really heats up!
